Beyon Waterloo is a two-player strategic level game of the Napoleonic Campaign of 1815. Players take the sides of France or the coalition of Allies. The game opens with Napoleon’s arrival at Paris following his return from Elba, and includes his efforts to restore France to a war footing, the Allies’ struggle to revive their anti-French coalition, and the military operations that ensue. BEYOND WATERLOO is played on a mapboard that includes France plus relevant portions of the Low Countries, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy.
Beyond Waterloo begins when Napoleon returns from Elba and regains power in Paris. Now what happens? That is up to you, subject to some historical foundations. The Allied Coalition was (and still "is") not happy about seeing "the Ogre" back on the throne and immediately branded him an "outlaw" and pledged armies to remove him. But the Congress of Vienna had not gone smoothly (there was nearly a war between Russia and Prussia!) and it's not certain just how fervent everyone will be. The game includes these uncertainties and unknowns.
"But what about Waterloo?" Well, that campaign happened because the British and Prussians were the first to get an army within "striking" distance and Napoleon felt like his best chance was to beat them – quickly – and see if that impacted negotiations. Will that happen again? It's up to you!
